Everyone has a camera… some thoughts on why photographers are more important than ever.
Being a photographer in the day in age when “everyone” has a camera in their hands is a risky venture for sure.  With the advent of modern “smart” phones, almost everyone is a photographer on some level. To me, this phenomenon does not equate to competition, but instead elevates the need for photography that is a cut above the usual, even a bit unusual.  What other industry has almost everyone competing against them? Architects, surgeons, or musicians?  No, it’s basically just this one field. I am not complaining though, seeing it all around me is another way I know the important place that photography holds in our culture.
While most people certainly enjoy a quality photo, I often wonder if they appreciate how difficult pro-photography is, to break into, be seen, stand out, and why it’s so important to have certain moments recorded by a professional.  Photographers not only offer an objective, third-party perspective, but we offer critical distinctions such as: trained eyes, cutting edge gear, and years of experience. Many different circumstances can arise, from poor lighting, to difficult or unpredicted situations…as they say “life happens,” and usually not as planned.  It is in these “life” moments where it is critical to have a professional.
Photographers not only offer an objective, third-party perspective, but we offer critical distinctions such as: trained eyes, cutting edge gear (plus the physical strength to carry and maneuver it for hours), and years of experience. And if you're lucky, an artful eye and playful manner."
